Culture

“In Bahia, popular culture touches the eyes, the ears and mouth (for its rich and delicious cuisine), it touches all the senses and inspires the artistic and literary creations. In spite of being popular , it is present on every artistic expression, regardless of its intellectual nature.” (Jorge Amado)

Culinary, art, cultural and religious manifestations, architecture and memory. When put together, these elements constitute the legacy of a people: their culture. However, the concept of culture in Salvador goes beyond any definition, comprising an endless universe of riches. And the greatest rich of all is the City´s population.

The mixture of creeds, legends, colors and races, is a result of the communion among Indians, Europeans and Africans. This unusual but exquisite blend was incorporated to the city and can be seen all through the year on its cultural manifestations. Capoeira, Candomblé, Makulelê and the Carnival are some of these popular representations. Ranging from its centuried architecture to his rhythmic diversity, everything in Salvador is unique.

The magic of this city that charms so many people is as mysterious as the love affair between the moon and the ocean, and as beautiful as the sunset at Humaitá. Observed from the top of Elevador Lacerda the city displays a multitude of worlds. Some are colorful like Pelourinho, some are strong like the faith shared by the population, some are frenetic like the dancing of the people parading to the sound of the Trios Elétricos during carnival. There are also precious worlds, like the city’s architecture. Delicious worlds, like the city’s cuisine. Salvador never stops, like the traffic of people and cars going up and down its hills. The way by which people interact with this diversity is what makes the culture of Salvador something so unique and special

Ranging from the Axé (a music style widely played during carnival) to the Bolero, from Reggae to Classical. Salvador is a musical caldron that boils to the beat of every rhythm, dances to the melody of each song, and reflects the colors of all races. Salvador is a city of faith. The same faith shared by those who believe in so many different creeds. Salvador welcomes all religions. It is open to every group, regardless of style or preference. Both the old and the young can enjoy the city’s lively nightlife, either in a club or in one of the innumerous bars spread along the seashore. People of all ages and from all over the world can experience Salvador’s unique plurality.

Unforgettable emotions, feelings and images stay forever in the hearts and minds of those who visit the city. So there is a tiny piece of Salvador on every corner of this planet. And the people who come here always feel an urge to return one day. Salvador, the city that remains dear in so many hearts and Salvador, capital of Bahia and sentimental capital of Brazil are the same. But only those who have the privilege of touching this blessed soil can genuinely feel its magic.
